Background of the study
Codeswitching is a prevalent linguistic strategy in Nigeria, particularly in digital communication where users navigate multiple languages fluidly. This study investigates codeswitching practices on WhatsApp and Facebook, two platforms that reflect the diverse linguistic repertoire of Nigerian society (Adeniyi, 2023). On WhatsApp, conversational exchanges often include spontaneous language switches to accommodate informal contexts and interpersonal relationships. Conversely, Facebook posts tend to exhibit a more deliberate blending of languages, reflecting both personal identity and broader cultural narratives (Ibrahim, 2024). The study explores how these platforms facilitate codeswitching, examining the social, cultural, and contextual factors that influence language choice. It considers the impact of digital literacy, audience expectation, and the hybridization of local and global languages in shaping communicative practices. The findings will provide insights into the adaptive nature of language use in digital spaces and the role of codeswitching in constructing social identities (Okafor, 2023).

Statement of the problem
While codeswitching is widely recognized in Nigerian digital communication, comparative studies that examine its manifestations across platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook remain scarce. Existing research often isolates codeswitching to one medium, neglecting the influence of platform-specific features on language choice (Chukwu, 2024). This lack of comparative analysis limits our understanding of how digital environments affect linguistic behavior. The study aims to address this gap by investigating and contrasting the patterns, motivations, and implications of codeswitching in WhatsApp versus Facebook communications, thereby offering a nuanced view of multilingual practices in Nigerian digital discourse (Adeniyi, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To analyze codeswitching practices on WhatsApp and Facebook.
  2. To compare the frequency and contexts of codeswitching across the two platforms.
  3. To evaluate the impact of codeswitching on digital identity formation.

Research questions

  1. What are the predominant patterns of codeswitching on WhatsApp and Facebook?
  2. How do contextual factors influence codeswitching on each platform?
  3. What is the role of codeswitching in shaping digital communication in Nigeria?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of codeswitching practices in Nigerian digital communication. The insights will inform sociolinguistic research and digital communication strategies, highlighting the role of multilingualism in online discourse (Adeniyi, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to examining code-switching practices in Nigerian WhatsApp and Facebook communications. It does not extend to other digital platforms or offline interactions.

Definitions of terms

  • Code-Switching: The alternating use of two or more languages within a single conversation.
  • WhatsApp Communication: Textual exchanges on the WhatsApp messaging platform.
  • Facebook Communication: User-generated posts and comments on Facebook.
